Recently I've decided to try out blacksmithing. I feel like it would make my renaissance, medieval, and Nordic costumes more authentic.

I was told that this book was a good place to start to learn the basics before getting hands on. The Backyard Blacksmith by Lorelei Sims. She covers the safety needed, the tools you'll want to start to work with, and she even has examples of projects with step-by-step instructions.

My contact that I was able to talk to from the AACB was able to tell me a few things I could do before I come and try it out.


When I went to the meeting I learned a few things about knife making and how to use a coal forge.


They showed us how to make a hook from a horseshoe nail, leaf key-chain, and a Nordic/viking hair pin. The hair pin could also be used for a cloak pin.
